Mercedes-Benz India previews A-Class

  | Venkat Desirazu
Mercedes-Benz India has previewed the
upcoming A-Class hatchback on its official
website and is holding a special contest as
precursor to the launch. We already know
that the German automaker is likely to
launch the car for the Indian market in May
and has confirmed that it will be made
available in both petrol and diesel variants.
The variant that is expected to arrive here
will be A-180 petrol and diesel. While the
former is is a 1.6-litre turbocharged unit
producing 123.7PS and 200Nm of torque,
the oil burner will also be a 1.6-litre mill
that produces 110.5PS and 260Nm of
torque.
The third generation A-Class was unveiled
globally in 2012 and has been a strong
seller for the German automaker. Currently
Mercedes-Benz has over 90, 000 bookings
for the hatchback and is running three
shifts a day at its Rastatt plant to meet the
demand.
The A-Class is based on Mercedes-Benz’s
MFA front-wheel drive architecture and is a
part of a five car sub-Rs 25 lakh range that
the German automaker will launch for the
Indian market by 2015. The first car in this
range was the B-Class petrol that was
unveiled in October last year. We expect
that Mercedes-Benz will price the car in the
range of Rs 17 lakh to Rs 19 lakh.
